Raspberry Pi 5 Setup Guide: Getting Started in the UAE
Everything you need to know to get your Raspberry Pi 5 up and running — from choosing the right power supply to setting up your first project.
The Raspberry Pi 5 is the most powerful Pi yet — with a 2.4GHz quad-core Arm Cortex-A76 processor, PCIe 2.0 interface, and up to 16GB of RAM. Whether you're building a home server, a retro gaming console, a robotics platform, or a desktop replacement, the Pi 5 is a serious piece of hardware. Here's how to get started.
What You Need
- Raspberry Pi 5 board (4GB, 8GB, or 16GB RAM)
- Official Raspberry Pi 27W USB-C Power Supply (required — the Pi 5 needs more power than older models)
- MicroSD card (32GB minimum, Class 10 or better) or NVMe SSD via the PCIe HAT
- Micro HDMI to HDMI cable (the Pi 5 uses micro HDMI, not full-size)
- USB keyboard and mouse
- Optional: official Raspberry Pi 5 case with active cooler
Power Supply — Do Not Cut Corners
The Pi 5 requires a 5V/5A (27W) USB-C power supply. Using an underpowered supply — including most phone chargers — will cause the Pi to throttle its CPU and display a low-voltage warning in the top-right corner of the screen. The official Raspberry Pi 27W PSU is the safest choice and is available from Battery Gulf.
The Pi 5 will not boot at all from some low-quality USB-C cables. Use the cable supplied with the official PSU, or a high-quality USB-C cable rated for 5A.
Installing Raspberry Pi OS
- Download Raspberry Pi Imager from raspberrypi.com/software on your PC or Mac.
- Insert your microSD card into your computer.
- Open Imager, choose your Pi model, select "Raspberry Pi OS (64-bit)", and choose your SD card.
- Click the settings gear icon to pre-configure Wi-Fi, hostname, and SSH — this saves time on first boot.
- Click Write and wait for the process to complete.
- Insert the SD card into your Pi 5, connect your display, keyboard, and mouse, then plug in the power supply.
First Boot
On first boot the Pi will resize the filesystem to fill your SD card, then reboot into the Raspberry Pi OS desktop. If you pre-configured Wi-Fi in Imager, it will connect automatically. Run "sudo apt update && sudo apt upgrade" in a terminal to get the latest software.
Cooling
The Pi 5 runs significantly hotter than the Pi 4 under load. Without any cooling, the CPU will throttle above 80°C. The official active cooler (a small fan + heatsink combination) keeps temperatures well below throttle point even under sustained load. If you're running the Pi in a case, make sure there is airflow.
